The museum was founded in 1984, and housed in the mediaeval fort. The permanent exhibition had, apart from the archaeological material from over a hundred sites in the Benkovac region that shows the continuity of archaeological periods from the Palaeolithic period to the Middle Ages, presented collections of ethnographical and cultural and historical objects.
The museum is located in the territory that was occupied from 1991 to August 5th 1995, during which period it was inaccessible to museum personnel and the Agency for the Protection of Monuments.

Protection:

There are no reports concerning the protection of the holdings and protection of the building.
* According to the report of the Observer Mission of the EU, dated June 1994, the museum was open to the public, and the museum collection complete.

Building damage:


The building had sustained no direct damage, but the museum and its collections were found to be in disorder.

Structure damage:

 

The disappearance of a part of the archaeological holdings was established.
It was impossible to carry out the revision of the ethnographic and cultural and historical collection because of the lack of the inventory list or photographic documentation; there can be no doubt that a part of the holdings is missing.
