The collection holds an exceptionally valuable collection of old jewellery and handmade textiles with the renowned Konavle embroidery. From October 1991 to October 1992 the museum was on the temporarily occupied territory of the Republic of Croatia, exposed to artillery attacks and physical devastation.
Approximately 500 of the most valuable items, mostly ethnographic textiles, were hidden in a tank, which is a part of the museum. The rest of the inventory - furniture, household utensils, paintings by Siso Konavljanin - were moved to the museum ground floor, next to the double concrete wall, and covered with wooden and plastic panelling. The wine cellar and he mill together with their inventory, as well as the museum office together with the library, could not in the given circumstances be either protected or evacuated.
* October 6th and 7th 1991After the enemy army invasion, the historical nucleus of Cilipi and all the other housing and farm buildings were burned, and with them the building of the Local Museum and the wine cellar and the mill, together with their inventory.
The hiding place in the tank was discovered and after the initial devastation of the museum inventory, the local military commander stopped the devastation and burning, enabling the evacuation of the holdings to Cavtat. After stocktaking, at the end of 1992, it was noted that 3 pairs of gold earrings, 12 golden caps and 10 golden waistcoats are missing. The rest of the items from the tank was dirtied by the soot, and a painting by V. Bukovac, "The Women from Konavle" (1887) was damaged by the fire (the painting is the property of the Gallery of Fine Arts in Dubrovnik). The museum inventory was burned - furniture, household utensils, paintings by Siso Konavljanin, and the copper pans from the fireplace were damaged in the fire. The inventory of the vine cellar and the mill was also burned. The revision of the holdings and preparation work on documents are under way, and so the number of damaged items is not final.
