The museum is housed in a Baroque curia surrounded by a park, in the middle of the town. Its holdings are divided into the archaeological, the cultural and historical, the historical and the ethnographic collection. The collection of fine arts is, together with its exhibition rooms, housed in a separate building.
The museum was exposed to artillery attacks from the occupied territory in the immediate vicinity.

Protection:

All museum holdings were stored in a safer place during the war.

Building damage:

October 29th 1991
During a rocket attack on the nearby school and marketplace, shell shrapnel had lightly damaged the southern facade of the museum building. Six windowpanes were broken.

Structure damage:

On the first floor of the building housing the Collection of Fine Arts, storerooms of the Red Cross were situated. A water pipe had burst in the storage and water had seeped down to the ground floor storeroom that had contained the packed holdings of the collection. A couple of pictures were slightly damaged.
