The permanent museum exhibition is housed in a Baroque building of the city Magistrate, dating from the 18th century, which is currently being prepared for restoration. Administration and rooms for temporary exhibitions are housed in a modern building built next to the museum building. The museum holdings are divided into the following departments: geological and palaeontological, natural history, archaeology with numismatics, history, cultural history, ethnography, a gallery and a technical department, together with a rich library and workshop for restoration and conservation.
During all the war years, the museum buildings were exposed to artillery attacks from the occupied territory in the immediate vicinity.

Museum holdings classified as groups A and B, as well as a part of the museum documentation, were evacuated to the Varazdin Municipal Museum and the Medjimurje Museum in Cakovec.
The rest of the museum holdings were stored in permanent exhibition rooms and basement rooms of the Museum, which are not suitable for storing museum items for a long time.
* The evacuated material was returned to the museum in the middle of 1996.

Building damage:

During the war years, the museum buildings were hit and damaged several times during the attacks on the town.
April 6th 1992
During shelling from Bosanski Brod, the roofing of the administration building was hit. All windowpanes on the museum buildings were broken. Sniper shots had destroyed some of the glass showcases in the interior.

Structure damage:

Because of a lack of storage rooms and moving to a new building, the revision of the holdings was not done. There are indications that a part of the material is damaged. The revision of the holdings is being prepared.
Plans for listing war damage have been announced, and they require the preparation of documentation and photographic documentation.
