The museum is housed in an 18th century Baroque building. The holdings are divided into several departments: archaeological, historical, ethnographic, natural history and numismatic, while the GALLERY OF FINE ARTS is housed in a separate building.
During the war, from 1991 to 1995, the museum was exposed to artillery attacks and destruction from the occupied territory in the immediate vicinity.

Protection:

The most valuable items from the museum holdings were evacuated to Varazdin. The rest of the holdings were stored in several safe locations in the town. The inventory books were microfilmed and together with the rest of the documentation stored in metal cupboards. Wooden planks protected monuments from the collection of stone monuments.
* The evacuated material was returned to the Museum in May of 1997.

Building damage:

During the war period, the museum building had suffered direct and indirect hits on twelve occasions. The Museum was hit for the first time on September 14th 1991, and the last hit was recorded on August 5th 1995.
The building had suffered major damage through shelling. The roofing and tiles were damaged and, in a couple of places, on the first floor level, the facade was blasted through, window frames were blasted out, and stucco decorations around the windows destroyed. All facades are full of holes from direct hits and shrapnel splinters. The windowpanes on the ground and first floors were broken. The interior of the building, walls, floors and installations, had suffered major damage (the damage was estimated at 62,000 DEM).

Structure damage:

Direct hits had caused heavy damage to two Roman sarcophagi in the collection of stone monuments.
