The gallery is housed in a contemporary building. Its holdings encompass works by domestic and foreign painters from the 19th and 20th centuries. The gallery has no permanent display, but carries on regular and rich exhibition activities.
From October 1991 to August 1995 the gallery was exposed to artillery attacks from the occupied territory in the immediate vicinity.

Protection:

All paintings from the gallery were evacuated to a safe place in town.

Building damage:

During the heavy artillery attacks on the town from the 4th to the 7th of October 1991, the building was severely damaged. A direct hit to the flat roof made of reinforced concrete had made a hole through which rain poured straight into the exhibition rooms. Of nine plastic domes on the roof, six were destroyed. All the windowpanes of the two-storey building (106 of them), as well as two doors with plate glass, had been shattered by the blasts. The parquet and fitted carpet in the exhibition rooms were also destroyed.

Structure damage:

The holdings were not damaged.
