The Mestrovic Atelier is housed in a complex of buildings (dating from the 17th and 18th centuries) remodelled into a family home with a study. Mestrovic had lived and worked here from 1922 to 1942. The collection consists of 302 statues, furniture made according to the designs by Mestrovic, as well as rich photo documentation and archival holdings. Also deposited in the holdings are 1,069 architectural plans and works by I. Mestrovic, which are the property of the artist's heirs.
The Museum has, together with five other Zagreb museums, suffered damage during the bombing of the Upper Town in October of 1991.

Protection:

The museum items from the permanent exhibition were categorised and protected according to possibilities dictated by the rooms. Most of the sculptures were taken down from their pedestals, laid horizontally on the floor and protected by sandbags, wooden crates or covered with linen. The inventory books were microfilmed. The documentation, archives and works on paper were stored in metal cupboards.

Building damage:

October 7th 1991
During the bombing of the historical nucleus of the Upper Town, strong detonations and flying shrapnel from rockets and bombs damaged the museum building. The building's static stability and construction were threatened, the joist beam in the inter-ceiling construction had cracked, and so had some of the supporting walls.
The double glazing on the roof and the metal roof construction of the atelier was destroyed. The glass wall of the ground floor exhibition rooms was destroyed, and all the windowpanes on the building broken. Wooden door and window frames, as well as parquet floors were damaged.

Structure damage:

The bronze sculpture entitled "Remembrance II" had received several deep scratches from flying glass and other material.
